Graduate Student Fellowship Available in the Barley Coordinated Agricultural Project (CAP) for Translating Genomics to Barley Improvement
Department of Plant Pathology
University of Minnesota, St. Paul
A graduate student fellowship is available to work on the Barley CAP in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Minnesota. We are seeking a highly motivated individual to develop and utilize genomics tools for the improvement of barley, especially for disease resistance. The successful candidate will utilize computer software programs to identify molecular haplotype-disease resistance associations, develop individual research projects based on Barley CAP germplasm and data, and participate in outreach and extension activities for the project. Candidates should have a strong background in plant genetics, plant pathology, statistics, and molecular biology. The home department will be in Plant Pathology, but the student is expected to work closely with faculty in the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics (Gary Muehlbauer, Kevin Smith, and Rex Bernardo).
To apply, please send a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, transcripts, and the names of three references to:

THT Bioinformatics Specialist - Postdoctoral Position, Iowa State University, Ames, IA,
Virtual Reality Applications
Center, Plant Pathology (Click here for full detailed job description)
The Hordeum Toolbox (THT) is the data portal of the USDA-CSREES funded Barley Coordinated Agricultural Project (CAP)
(www.barleycap.org). The Barley CAP is a community effort of 30 scientists from 19 institutions with expertise ranging from
genetics/genomics, breeding,
pathology,
databases, computer science, food science, malt quality, and statistics. The overall
theme of the barley CAP is to integrate and utilize state-of-the-art genomic tools and
approaches
in plant
breeding programs,
thereby facilitating the development of superior
barley cultivars and access
to agronomic and economically important genes.
The THT
bioinformatics specialist will
work with a small local team of database and web programmers
and international
collaborators
to develop a database for storing breeding, phenotype, and SNP marker data and building cross-references to
other information (e.g., microarray expression
data, sequence assemblies); development and maintenance of online tools for
querying,
analyzing, and cross-referencing
data for a range of
user groups such as plant breeders and molecular
biologists;
communication
with remote investigator groups to ensure that all
relevant biological information from experiments will
be
included in the database schema.
Required Qualifications: M.S. or Ph.D. in bioinformatics or computer science; experience in
database development; good
written and verbal communication skills.
